Sophisticated and very advanced, the 2019 Infiniti QX50’s VC-T engine develops 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and yet its fuel economy numbers are improved by 30 % over a comparable V6 engine.

The VC-T can vary the compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1 depending on what is needed by the driver. So, when power is needed, the compression ratio is lowered and you get more punch from the engine. When you don’t need power, the compression ratio increases to promote better fuel economy.

In other words, you really get the best of both worlds with the Infiniti QX50 and its VC-T engine. When you are cruising along at a constant speed, fuel economy is much lower than what you would normally expect from a compact luxury SUV with 268 horsepower. That said, when power is needed to pass or accelerate with confidence, the compression ratio lowers and you get an instant reaction from the QX50.
