2020 Infiniti QX50 vs. 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan: Technology Prevails

2020 Infiniti QX50 vs. 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan: Technology Prevails

The award-winning Infiniti QX50 makes many top lists among industry professionals, but it's also much admired by owners. With excellent power, handling, efficiency and design, it continues to build success in the luxury segment.

It's also important to compare it to the competition, so you can make the right purchasing decision. Here, we compare it to the Volkswagen Tiguan.

The Infiniti QX50 has superior power and efficiency

The QX50 features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that generates an exciting 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission that enhances performance and efficiency. Each transmission includes manual shift mode w/downshift rev matching and dual automatic transmission fluid coolers.

Overall, the QX50 achieves a fuel economy rating of 10.8 L/100 km in the city and 8.3 L/100 km on the highway, which is better than the AWD Tiguan models at 11.5 / 8.7 L/100 km in the same driving conditions. The QX50's engine, transmission and efficiency are the same with every trim in the lineup.

The QX50's innovative variable compression turbocharged engine is an industry first and it was also recognized with the ALG Powertrain Innovation Award, citing its power, efficiency and dynamics. This engine was also recognized by Wards, placing it on its list of the year's 10 Best Engines.

The Tiguan also has a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, but horsepower reverts to 184 and torque to 221. This creates a respective difference of -96 horsepower and -79 lb-ft of torque when compared to the QX50. The engine pairs with an eight-speed transmission, which is less advanced than the QX50's CVT.

All QX50 models feature standard all-wheel drive. However, it is not standard on all Tiguan trims.

The Infiniti QX50 has a top interior

The QX50 offers better passenger comfort than the Tiguan in key areas, including more front headroom and shoulder room. It also has more average rear legroom and shoulder room. As a matter of fact, Wards recently recognized the QX50 on its list of the year's 10 Best Interiors.

Overall, the quality of the QX50 was widely recognized when it was recently a runner-up for the Best Mid-Size Premium Utility Vehicle in Canada by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). You won't find the Tiguan on this prestigious list.
