The compact-sized luxury SUV market is full of quality players. Among them is the 2023 Infiniti QX55, as well as the 2023 Acura RDX. The latter is well known, as it has a long career. Some might be tempted to choose it before the Infiniti representative, because the latter is new on the market.
You shouldn't make that mistake before you get to know it well, especially since improvements have been made to the model for 2023. Here's why the QX55 is a more interesting product than the Acura RDX.
New, but not new
The Infiniti QX55 may be a new model on the market, but it's not actually entirely new. Specifically, it's a more stylized, coupe-like version of the QX50, a familiar and long-running member of the Infiniti family.
So there's no need to worry about it, as it shares its proven powertrains with the QX50.
VC-Turbo
Speaking of which, let's talk about that engine. Both Infiniti and Acura have a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder powertrain under the hood. Power and torque are virtually identical. However, the QX55 offers an advantage, namely variable compression technology. This means that the engine's compression ratio changes depending on whether you want more power or better fuel economy. And it's done automatically, so when you're driving smoothly, you're driving a more fuel-efficient model.
That's a benefit not to be overlooked.
Equipment
Both models offer all the luxuries you'd expect, but this year Infiniti goes above and beyond with the addition of features that make all the difference.
For example, right off the bat, all models will benefit from the semi-autonomous ProPilot Assist driving system. This system allows you to let your vehicle guide you through traffic, making sure to stay within its lines and at a distance from the vehicle in front. You don't get that with Acura.
Then, each version inherits power-folding mirrors, four-way power lumbar support for the driver, a USB-C outlet now standard for rear occupants, blind spot intervention, as well as welcome lights on the rear door handles.
Upgrading to the Essential model adds traffic sign recognition this year. With the Sensory model, heated rear seats are added, as well as four lumbar adjustments for the front passenger seat.
In fact, it's hard to find a model that offers such a complete and comprehensive list of equipment in this class.
Behind the wheel
Finally, behind the wheel, you'll notice a striking difference; while the RDX emphasizes comfort, the Infiniti QX55 adds a dynamic quality that many competitors lack. It's a real pleasure to drive.
And without wanting to be mean, it's so much more pleasant to use Infiniti's multimedia system than Acura's, which is accessible via a touchpad that has received nothing but criticism throughout the industry since its debut.
