What is active safety?

If you're looking for a new vehicle, you've probably seen the term active safety go by. If you are wondering what it is exactly, this article will be able to help you.

Simply put, active safety refers to all the systems that can prevent accidents. Passive safety, on the other hand, refers more to those systems that come into play to protect you in the event of a collision. Airbags and the vehicle’s structure would be an example of passive safety.

Active safety, on the other hand, refers to those systems that detect dangers. Examples including the automatic braking system with pedestrian detection. This system can detect if a vehicle suddenly brakes or if a pedestrian is about to cross the road. If this type of situation arises, the system will be able to warn the driver and then activate the brakes if the driver does not react. Infiniti models have an even more advanced system that can detect if the vehicle ahead of the vehicle in front of you brakes.

The same goes for lane change detection systems. The system detects if you deviate from your lane and can then intervene to prevent the lane change if you do not respond. Other examples of active safety technologies include adaptive cruise control and lane centering which will automatically follow the road, even when it curves.
